Bomme Barona Support Group want to keep the elderly busy

Bomme Barona show off their handwork they are doing at Tswelopelo Old Clinic in Spruitview.

The organisation does beadwork, gym for elderly people, choral music, and also makes mats, scarfs and traditional outfits.

According to Joice Nkosi, the chairperson of the organisation, the purpose of the meeting was to celebrate Mother’s Day that was postponed due to the concert held in Vosloorus.

“The most important part about this meeting is to exhibit our work so that the community of Kathorus and the surroundings know what we are doing and where we are doing it,” said Nkosi.

She said the organisation has been existing for over four years now.

“Ever since we started we have been meeting here three times a week – Monday to Wednesday – to do our handwork that we are selling during the exhibitions like today. Very few people coming here to buy because people do not know about us. We would like to send the message via Kathorus MAIL to the community out there so that they know what we do and where we are,” said Nkosi.

According to Rubben Nkonde, the vice-chairperson and the only male member of the organisation, they want the Tswelopele Old Clinic) to be the centre for elderly people to go to.

“This is where we want the elderly to get together and de-stress and enjoy doing handwork, singing choral music, as well gym. The government grant is too little to rely on, so this programme will help the elderly to make extra money and at the same time keep them busy as they become very lonely sometimes,” said Nkonde.

He pleaded with men to come and join the organisation instead of sitting at home and do nothing.

The organisation will hold a 67 minutes for Mandela event on Mandela Day when Madiba would have turned 100 years of age.
