Kathorus has a rising hip hop star in Lunga Mthembu, also known as Lungstafame in the music industry

Mthembu found success with the release of a single called Umona in 2015, which peaked in the top two listeners’ choice at Kasie FM.

He was nominated for SA Awards in 2015 under the categories Best Hip Hop Song of the Year and Best Hip Hop Artist of the Year.

Born on April 20, 1989, Mthembu grew up in Vosloorus. He attended high school at St Anthony’s, where he took part in athletics and various sports activities, including soccer, rugby and swimming.

Mthembu discovered his vocal talent when he was in the school choir in primary school. He then developed a love for rap music when he was in grade 8, at the age of 14.

He matriculated in 2007, carrying his dreams of becoming a performing artist.

“My rapping passion was influenced by the kwaito legend Zola. I used to listen to most of his songs,” Mthembu told Kathorus MAIL. “I performed for my family and friends with a wooden stick as a microphone. That also enhanced my writing skills and I started writing my own songs.”

In 2005, he was a member of a group called Abathakathi, which has since disbanded. Trying to make a name for their hometown, they used to perform at private functions, local gigs and parties. The group was well received and had a lot of supporters throughout its journey.

Mthembu said that in 2013 he pursued his dream and decided to be a solo artist. He signed with Moonscape Entertainment, where he recorded Umona.

“In 2015 I left Moonscape Entertainment and decided to become independent and registered my own record label, Background Music Entertainment, where I work closely with my brother as a co-owner.

“Under the same umbrella, I also shared the stage with bigger names such as Ricky Rick, Hip-Hop Pantsula, Khuli Chana as well as Tuks,” Mthembu said.

He said working with such big names inspired him and made him realise that rapping is not only playing with words and entertaining, but is a lifestyle.

He said that on social media he is known as Lunga Mthembu on Facebook. One can tweet him at @Lungstafam. On Instagram he is known as Lunga.
